Oh Christmas Tree

Oh Christmas Tree
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:5

Every Christmas we bring trees into our homes, wrapping them with lights and decorations. Have you ever wondered why we do this?

There are historical reasons, you could look at the story of the first trees decorated int eh 16th century or how Victoria and Albert popularised them in Britain.

Yet there is deeper significance. The evergreen stands as a defiant declaration against the barrenness of winter—a promise that life persists even when everything around us seems dormant and cold.

This is the heart of Christmas itself. Into our world of death and decay, God sent eternal life wrapped in infant flesh. Jesus came as the evergreen promise—life that death cannot touch, hope that winter cannot kill. When we look at our Christmas trees, we’re gazing at an ancient symbol of immortality, life that will survive death and darkness.

Christmas is a reminder of the day that eternal life invaded our dark world, the lights were switched on and everything changed.

Lord Jesus, you are the Life that came into our dying world. As I look at the evergreen tree, help me remember that your life is not subject to seasons or decay. Plant your eternal life deep in my heart, that I might remain green and fruitful even in the coldest seasons of my soul. Amen.
